Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is dental care that requires immediate attention, like a knocked-out tooth, severe and uncontrollable tooth pain or bleeding from the mouth. Everybody wants straighter teeth, but nobody wants to go through all the hassles of traditional metal braces. Thankfully, there’s an alternative. At Hilltop Dental in Agoura Hills, California, George B. Apelian, DDS, offers state-of-the-art clear aligners, like Invisalign® and ClearCorrect®, to give his patients a straighter smile and better bite with a treatment that’s comfortable, convenient, and discreet. To get started on your journey toward a better smile with clear aligners, schedule your visit today by calling the office or booking online.

Emergency dentists are trained to handle urgent situations and are skilled at operating under pressure to provide you with quick and effective dental care.

If you’re experiencing an emergency, get yourself to the Hilltop Dental offices as soon as possible, preferably within 30 minutes of your accident. Getting timely care could mean the difference between saving or losing your tooth.

Do I need emergency dental care?

If you’ve experienced physical trauma that’s caused significant damage to your teeth, you should probably seek emergency care.

Some other examples of situations that require emergency dentistry include:

  • Bleeding anywhere in your mouth
  • A tooth that’s been knocked out
  • Severe pain
  • A tooth that’s significantly broken or cracked
  • A loose permanent tooth
  • A laceration on your lips
  • Swelling in your gums, tongue, or mouth

If you’re experiencing any of these situations or think that you might otherwise need emergency dental care, call Hilltop Dental immediately.

Dr. Apelian and his team can help you determine whether you need to be seen immediately and can instruct you on what to do until you can make it to the office.

What do I do with a knocked-out tooth?

A knocked-out tooth is almost always considered a dental emergency, so get yourself to Hilltop Dental as soon as you can. Otherwise, you’ll risk losing your tooth forever.

Until you can be seen, there are some measures that you can take to make it more likely that Dr. Apelian will be able to save your tooth.

First, rinse your mouth and your knocked-out tooth with warm water. Never touch the root of the knocked-out tooth. Instead, rinse it off by holding onto the crown (the top part).

If possible, you can try to reinsert your tooth into the empty socket. Remember, don’t touch the roots when doing this. If you can get your tooth back in the socket, bite down on it carefully and gently to keep it in place until you can see Dr. Apelian.

If you can’t get the tooth back into your empty socket, you can keep the roots from drying out by keeping it in your mouth (being careful not to swallow it) or storing it in a glass of milk.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to Hilltop Dental for your dental emergency. You can come straight to the office, or book an appointment by phone or online.
