Clear Aligners Q & A

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners, like Invisalign and ClearCorrect, are a revolutionary orthodontic treatment for straightening your teeth and improving your bite. They’re made from smooth, clear plastic that fits snugly on your teeth and virtually disappears on your smile.

Clear aligners have become an incredibly popular alternative to braces, giving you a better-looking and healthier smile with much less time and hassle.

What’s the process of getting clear aligners?

Dr. Apelian takes an impression of your smile using either a dental putty or an intraoral camera. That impression is uploaded to a computer, where it’s used to make a virtual model of your smile.

That model is manipulated to map out all of the “steps” that your teeth need to take in order to get into their target alignment. Each one of those “steps” is then turned into a set of aligners in your series.

You wear your aligners all day, every day, taking them out only to brush, floss, and eat. Your aligners exert a small-yet-constant amount of pressure that gradually pushes your teeth towards their target alignment.

Every two weeks, once your teeth have settled into their new position, you switch out to the next aligner in your series, until you’ve finally reached your target alignment!

What conditions do clear aligners correct?

Clear aligners correct many of the same conditions as traditional metal braces, including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Open bite

Many patients also choose to use clear aligners to generally straighten their teeth and improve the appearance of their smile.

What are the benefits of clear aligners?

Clear aligners give you a straighter smile, which is not only more aesthetically pleasing but also functions better as well.

Smiles with straight teeth and a properly aligned bite are less susceptible to developing cavities, gum disease, premature wear and tear, and TMJ disorder.

Clear aligners also have a number of advantages over other orthodontic treatments, like traditional metal braces, including:

Because your clear aligners are made of smooth plastic, they won’t tear up the insides of your cheeks like braces do.

Because your clear aligners are removable, you don’t have to change your diet or learn any special cleaning techniques. Simply take out your aligners whenever you need to brush, floss, or eat, and put them back in after.

Your clear aligners are virtually invisible in your mouth, so you’ll avoid that “mouthful of metal” look that’s inescapable with braces.
